NIGHT OBSERVATION

The observation of the sky always impressed man and led him to the study of nature and the understanding of the natural laws that govern it. In an effort to transfer the unique experience of Astronomical Research to the Greek school classrooms, the Skinakas Observatory opens its gates “online” to the Greek Educational Community. The Observatory is located in Psiloritis in Crete at an altitude of 1750 meters and its operation is coordinated by the Institute of Astrophysics (IA) of the Institute of Technology and Research (FORTH).

On October 23, 2020, students and teachers from 10 Greek Schools will be connected online to the Skinakas Observatory and for two hours will have the opportunity to contact the researchers working there and watch how they prepare the telescope for night observation. Students and teachers will be guided to the observatory and will see the giant telescope of the Observatory in operation.
